Mobility Exchange Report: SINTEF -> INPG (September 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006 and May 1, 2007 - May 16, 2007)

Research Summary

I am a PhD student in co-tutelle between SINTEF and INPG. As a part of this work I have visited INPG in Grenoble. The objective of the research is to improve efficiency in scientific computations, especially in the field of mechanical engineering. The performance increase is achieved by using graphics processing units (GPUs).

3D-models used in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are often constructed for the
purpose of manufacturing. The models therefore contain shape details that are
unimportant for FEA. The main focus during my stay in Grenoble was to develop a GPU-based implementation of shape simplification.  The shape simplification aims at detecting and removing shape details from 3D-models.
