Research Summary

All the work done during my stay in Grenoble had the objective to add new operators to the software now in development in the section of the lab G-SCOP under the supervision of professor Jean Claude Leon.

The scope of the new functions is to improve the link between CAD and FEM. Having in input a model obtained by a CAD software, the objective is to adapt it to a partition decomposition as needed for a given application (FE mesh). Therefore, the operators needed have usually to merge partitions, edges and to remove vertices. The new added functions give the possibility to do these modifications, interactively by the user or automatically, given some tolerance values. A combination of these basic functions permits also to have the sharp edges model of an object.

The model obtained with the functions operating the adaptation can be non-manifold. Far to be a drawback or an error, this fact improves the control of the user on the object. In fact, he can obtain for example the sharp edges model of the object, that can be non-manifold, or leave interactively some non-manifold entities and use them as constraints during the creation of the FE model.

Then another operator capable of idealize holes has been done. This function is an additional option of a preexisting function that closes holes. If the user wants to close the hole but needs to leave some information in that place, he can now leave an edge having his extremes in the new surfaces closing the hole, and attach attributes in these entities.
