CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue of COMPUTERS & GRAPHICS on

Shape Reasoning and Understanding

Submission deadline: May 1, 2005

Shapes are considered as digital objects that are characterised by a visual appearance in a space of 2, 3, or more dimensions. Examples of shapes are pictures, sketches, images (all 2D), models of solid objects (3D), and animations (4D=3D+Time).

Digital shapes are expected to take a central role in the next years, with potentially high impact in several key areas related to a smart use of internet technologies. This has recently caused an increasing need of tools to browse, retrieve and navigate efficiently video or image databases, not to mention databases of 3D shapes and data volumes. Currently, information encoded in multi-dimensional digital media is implicit, as it is based on data formats that have no relation with data interpretation and offer no grasp to their direct access and easy understanding.

The international journal COMPUTERS & GRAPHICS is planning a special issue on Shape Reasoning and Understanding. Papers describing original research are solicited that deal with innovative shape reasoning schemes designed to automatically extract, understand, and enhance shape information.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Shape abstraction, modelling and description Shape analysis Shape interrogation Similarity between shapes Shape matching and retrieval Shape recognition and classification Shape decomposition and structuring Shape modification Extracting shape information Enhancing shape information Semantic annotation of shapes Shape ontology

  • Submission Deadline: May 1, 2005 Acceptance Decision: August 2005 Final Version Due: October 1, 2005

In all cases, the relation with shape reasoning must be made explicit!

Important Dates:

Electronic submission is preferred. Please email a PostScript or PDF file of your manuscript together with a cover letter to either of the two guest editors of this special issue: bianca.falcidieno@ge.imati.cnr.it or Remco.Veltkamp@cs.uu.nl

Alternatively, you can send 4 hardcopies to:

Bianca Falcidieno Istituto di Matematica Applicata e Tecnologie Informatiche Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche via de Marini 6 16149 Genova Italy

Remco Veltkamp Center for Geometry, Imaging, and Virtual Environments Institute of Information and Computing Sciences Padualaan 14 3584 CH Utrecht The Netherlands

All submissions will be refereed following the normal standard and practices. Additional information can be obtained by communicating with the special issue guest editors.
