The Challenges 2006 workshop is an event of the Special Interest Group on Geometric Modeling, CAD, Evolving Interfaces and Surfaces of ECMI, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry as well as part of the activities of the EU Network of Excellence on Shape Modelling AIM@SHAPE and of the Center of Mathematics for Applications (CMA), at the University of Oslo.
UPDATE: The documents of this event can be found here
It has become a nice tradition to announce the next workshop in this series, to be held in the same format as
in 2003 (http://www.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/ags/ag3/Macsinet/M2003/workshop.html),
in 2004 (http://www.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/ags/ag3/Macsinet/M2004/workshop04.html),
and in 2005 (http://www.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/ags/ag3/Macsinet/M2005/InvitationMarch2005.pdf),
You are very cordially invited to this event set up to promote the co-operation of industry and academia in
addressing relevant and challenging mathematical problems from geometry, computer-aided design, shape
modelling and other related areas. In a relaxed atmosphere conducive to interesting discussions, it is again
planned to bring together practitioners from industry and application-minded people from academia to
discuss current research issues, investigate future trends and explore concrete opportunities for
collaboration.
The invited presentations this year will be
Industrial uses of geometric modelling
- Some Geometric Modelling Problems in the Geosciences by Chris Farmer, Schlumberger, Abingdon Technology Centre, UK
- The Geometry of the Scroll Compressor by Jens Gravesen, Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, DK
Geometry descriptions beyond NURBS
- Barycentric Rational Interpolation by Kai Hormann, Clausthal University of Technology, GE
Geometry processing
- Efficient Compression of Large Geometry Meshes by Konrad Polthier, Freie Universität Berlin, GE
Participants are strongly encouraged to share their views with the others in contributed 20-minute
talks, and we are planning open discussion sessions as well.
The Challenges 2006 workshop is an event of the Special Interest Group on Geometric Modeling, CAD,
Evolving Interfaces and Surfaces of ECMI, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry
http://www.ecmi-indmath.org/ as well as part of the activities of the EU Network of Excellence on Shape
Modelling AIM@SHAPE www.aimatshape.net and of the Center of Mathematics for Applications (CMA),
at the University of Oslo, Norway www.cma.uio.no .
Please send an e-mail to Ms Sybille Drexler (drexler@mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de) to be put on the
mailing list, and let us know at your earliest convenience the title of your presentation if you intend to give
one.
As usual, details concerning travel, accommodation and the program of the meeting will be sent later to the
members of the event mailing list. The program will also appear on Ulrich Reif’s web pages
http://www.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/ags/ag3/ . As always there will not be any registration fees, but no
funding for attendees either.
The event venue is planned to be the same as for the last years, i.e. the meeting will take place at the
Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics http://www.igd.fhg.de/igd/profile/access/index.html. The
Challenges 2006 workshop is scheduled to start Thursday, March 9, at 11:00 am, and it will last until
around lunchtime on Friday, March 10. Please mark these dates on your calendar already now.
