Matsushima is known as one of the three best scenic spots in Japan.
The conference venue is Hotel Taikanso, the best hotel in the Matsushima area. The following sites provide us with the basic information of the place:
Useful information:

There are two JR (Japan Railway) stations in Matsushima Town. One is "Matsushima Kaigan and the other Matsushima" (Kaigan means ocean beech). These two stations are not far away from each other, but this time you are advised to use Matsushima Kaigan Station, which is a bit closer to the hotel.

Matsushima Kaigan Station is on Tohoku Line, whereas Matsushima Station is on Senseki Line. At Sendai Station, please go forward without hesitating to platform #10 on the basement floor, at which you can find a local train for Matsushima Kaigan Station. All trains stop at Matsushima Kaigan. DO NOT go to platforms #1 or #2 on the ground floor, where only a local train for Matsushima Station is available.

More info is available from the SMI2006 page. Visit also http://www.ifs.tohoku.ac.jp/SMI06/travel.html and download the english railway map.
